Applied Circuit and PCB Design

In this applied course participants learn how to design a predefined electronic circuit and how to lay out the associated circuit board. Students will actually design a PCB, which will be sent to manufacturing. Students will then assemble the PCB, and take the circuit into operation fixing problems where necessary. Altium Designer will be used as the CAE / CAD tool for design and simulation.

A complete description and schedule of the course can be found here.

Objectives

The goal is to become acquainted with all those practical aspects of PCB design by working through a modest but complete application example. This involves:

  • Understanding of technical specifications and requirements
  • Evaluation of components
  • Testability and efficient troubleshooting
  • Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
  • Usage of industrial CAE / CAD tools for circuit simulation and PCB design
  • Generation of fabrication data for the PCB manufacturers
  • PCB Assembly
  • Testing and commissioning

Prerequisites / Notes

  • The course is recommended to all students who intend to develop a circuit or construct a circuit board in a semester or diploma thesis. For the students to be optimally prepared and fully concentrate on the course project, it is recommended to take the course the semester preceding the realization of the thesis in question
  • The number of participants is limited to 24
  • For students and staff of the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering who complete the course, the Department covers the material expenses. All other participants have to bear these costs (approximately 200 CHF)

Administrative Information

Lectures are given by Alfonso Blanco Fontao and the course takes place every Thursday from 8:15 to 12:00 in ETZ K63

The course is offered in the Electrical Engineering and Information Technology Bachelor program, sections “Additional Subjects” and “Additional Third Year Courses”. Registration can be carried out on myStudies.
